The defining mission of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, a $1.1 billion enterprise located in the heart of Chicago, is to educate the next generation of physicians. Virginia Commonwealth University is a major public research university located in Richmond, the state capital of Virginia. VCU was founded in 1838 as the medical department of Hampden-Sydney College, becoming the Medical College of Virginia in 1854. In 1968, the General Assembly merged MCV with the Richmond Professional Institute, founded in 1917, to create Virginia Commonwealth University. Today, more than 31,000 students pursue 220 degree and certificate programs through VCU`s 13 schools and one college. Western Carolina University was founded in 1889 to bring higher education and career opportunities to the people of the western region of North Carolina. The 700-acre campus is located in Cullowhee, North Carolina, near the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge mountains, 52 miles west of Asheville. A member of the University of North Carolina system, WCU employs nearly 500 full-time faculty members, approximately 75 percent of whom hold doctoral or terminal degrees.
