The Village of Cordova is a small, quaint community located just a few miles north of the Quad-Cities on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River. Cordova maintains its warmth and charm even though we are just minutes away from such known places such as Exelon-Cordova Nuclear Power Plant and Cordova Dragway Park (drag strip), as well as several other surrounding businesses and manufacturing facilities. Locals believe the Mississippi river is heading upstream to its headwaters in Minnesota. This stretch includes Princeton Beach-possibly the premier river boating and recreation destination in the Bi-State area, which is located immediately adjacent to the Village of Cordova. First settled in the 1600′s, it was not until March 3rd, 1894 that it became the Incorporated Village of Amityville. In its infancy, the “friendly bay village”, as it has come to be known, was primarily a farming community that had strong ties to the fishing and boating industries. Salt hay was an important agri-product that was grown to feed livestock. But the farms and marine industries slowly gave way to the needs of summer visitors in search of comforts afforded by the cool breezes and beaches of the Great South Bay. Hotels, long since gone, supplanted the farms and marine industries that were located along the waterfront. The hordes of summer visitors that discovered early Amityville included stage and theater personalities, prominent members of society including businessmen, artists, writers and the so-called “rich and famous” Manhattanites. Although within the geographical boundaries of the Town of Babylon, residents of the Village enjoy the benefits of a local police force, fire department and public works department. Residents are taxed by the Village for these services and by the Town and County for school taxes and other public services, such as trash removal. The Village is part of the Amityville Public School District. Within the Village boundaries, there are numerous parks and public spaces for all to enjoy. They include: • Village Triangle and Gazebo – on Broadway between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road • Avon Lake – landscaped area at East and West Lake Drives • Delano Nature Trail – Union Avenue, East of Broadway • Edmund W. The people of Abilene are dedicated to the principle of local self-government, under law, as interpreted by the light of reason, and have established a municipal government capable of efficiently translating the wishes of the voters into effective administration as promptly and economically as possible. The first Abilene Charter went into effect in 1911. Abilene is a home rule city. It has all powers granted to home rule cities by the constitution and laws of Texas. The municipal government provided by the City Charter is known as Council-Manager Government. All powers of the City are vested in an elected City Council, which enacts legislation, adopts budgets, and determines policies. The City Council consists of six Council members and a Mayor, all of whom are elected at large. Each Council member serves for a term of three years. Terms for the City Council are on a three year staggered basis such that two Council members are elected each year. The Mayor and each Council member receive a salary of one dollar per year for each year he or she serves as Mayor or Council member. The Mayor appoints the City Manager, the City Secretary, the City Attorney, and the Judge of Municipal Court with the approval of the Council. The City Manager is the chief administrative officer of the City who executes the laws and administers the government of the City.
