The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is the lead agency charged with formulating the federal government’s health IT strategy and coordinating federal health IT policies, standards, programs, and investments. ONC is organizationally located within the Office of the Secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The West Virginia Health Information Network (WVHIN) offers services that enable the secure electronic exchange of patient health information, providing benefits to health care providers, health care systems and patients. In February 2010, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources received $7.8 million in federal funds as part of the State Health Information Exchange Cooperative Agreement Program. The West Virginia Health Information Network (WVHIN) is using these funds to launch WVHIN’s statewide electronic health information exchange services. In August 2011, the WVHIN chose Truven Health Analytics as its technical services partner. Together with Truven Health and its strategic partners, the WVHIN has made the electronic exchange of patient health information a reality for health care providers and patients across the State of West Virginia.
