The Opportunity
Overall, the objectives of the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO) role are to significantly increase public awareness of the issue of hunger, step-change public engagement in our mission, drive growth in unrestricted revenue, and build Feeding America into one of the best known and most admired non-profit brands in the country.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the CMCO is a key member of the Executive Team and oversees a team of more than two dozen marketing and communications professionals, multiple agency relationships and a total budget in excess of $20 million (inclusive of staff and agency fees). The CMCO is responsible for leading brand strategy, strategic communications and marketing plan development and execution, including direct marketing, integrated communications, public relations, public service announcement campaigns, celebrity engagement, website development, social media and digital. The CMCO ensures the organization`s message is distributed across channels and to targeted audiences in order to meet awareness, engagement and fundraising objectives. In a rapidly evolving and fragmented media environment, a premium will be placed on proving out new ways to scale online giving from core targets while delivering compelling messaging via mobile platforms, video and social media to engage new and younger audiences in the fight to end hunger.
Responsibilities
• Develop the Feeding America brand vision, goals and strategies, ensuring a positioning, brand personality and brand promise that is compelling, credible, and distinctive. Clearly articulate the most promising target(s) for engagement and relationship cultivation based on deep consumer insights about what motivates people to support a cause like domestic hunger relief and ending hunger.
• Develop and execute a best-in-class, fully-integrated marketing and communications plan that supports all aspects of Feeding America`s mission and effectively implements the brand strategy in a rapidly evolving, multi-channel world. Stay abreast of rapidly evolving technology and test new and innovative approaches to raising awareness and engaging the public.
• Develop and execute successful Direct Marketing strategies and reliably raise $30M+ in unrestricted revenue annually. Discover data-driven insights and scalable opportunities that drive top-quartile growth in online giving among large, national non-profits. Allocate resources within the marketing domain to optimize ROI today, while building the pipeline of future individual donors.
• Lead, manage and develop the talent of the Communications and Media Relations team to proactively and creatively drive visibility for the Feeding America brand, its key spokespeople (i.e. the CEO), and key messages. Support the training of additional spokespeople to ensure that FANO staff interfacing with the media are well able to represent the organization. Develop and execute on a targeted, proactive communications and media strategy across both traditional and on-line channels. Provide a keen vision and strategic focus in driving media outreach efforts, building and executing an annual communications plan while also remaining highly responsive to real time opportunities, driving earned media.
• Develop and implement an Executive Communications plan (both external and internal messaging) including email, social media, blog posts and communications support for high profile speaking engagements.
• Provide marketing and communications partnership and support to other functions as needed, such as Government Relations, Research, Corporate Partnerships and Programs.
• Be a compelling and inspiring spokesperson for Feeding America in front of the media and other key audiences as needed.
• Build strong and collaborative working relationships with Feeding America network members at the CEO as well as marketing and communications functional leadership levels. Create, deliver, and drive Feeding America Network-wide marketing and communications platforms, incorporating key messages and turn-key tools that enable member participation and ease of execution locally.
• Develop a comprehensive marketing and communications performance framework aligned with the integrated plan, tracking breadth and depth of engagement with key target(s), as well as the development of key brand attributes, benchmarking against other leading non-profits to ensure Feeding America achieves best-in-class performance.
• Ensure that FANO internal and external communications are both in alignment with our goals and executed in a way that reflects a common style, consistency and quality. Lead efforts, working closely with HR, Governance and Finance to ensure that FANO and the network are well versed and appropriately managing risks pertaining to use of digital communications regarding privacy, copyright, etc.
• Manage the Feeding America brand image internally and externally. Own brand equity guidelines and drive them through everything we do to ensure we, our members, and our partners consistently communicate the brand image, positioning, promise, personally and tone of voice.
• Monitor the external landscape (i.e. key activities and public engagement efforts by other leading non-profits) and be an impeccable source of sector and market intelligence for strategic planning purposes.
• Liaise with members, as well as various teams from across organization to effectively lead crisis management from a communications standpoint. Conduct crisis communication tabletop exercises and media relations/reputation management training to strengthen enterprise risk management capability at Feeding America and throughout the network.
• Lead special projects, as needed.
Requirements
• MBA required with at least 15 years of demonstrated success in marketing and communications management with at least 7 years of leadership experience at the most senior levels in corporate, agency, or non-profit settings.
• Experience leading the development and execution of effective, comprehensive and innovative marketing and communications plans for well-known and highly regarded brands in organizations known for excellence in insight-driven marketing and customer or donor experience.
• Experience leveraging marketing discipline to drive measurable increases in attention and market share: including strategy development, marketplace positioning differentiation, branding and integrated and multi-channel communication messaging.
• Track record of building, managing and mentoring high-performing teams that produce timely, cost-effective, high-quality results.
• Record of success in creating and launching effective cause marketing partnerships, media partnerships and communications platforms.
• In-depth understanding and success in effective use of social media and proven experience in the digital and social marketing arenas, bringing both a strategic marketing perspective but also savvy regarding digital media tools and usage.
• Strong leadership, analytical, and strategic planning skills, including evidence of ability to work effectively across functions to achieve strategic alignment and drive results.
• Proven capacity for collaborative relationship building with key stakeholders, including agencies and other outside advisors.
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated excellence in communications - written and verbal. Comfort presenting in a variety of settings, from large public audiences to boardrooms.
