Uplift Education (Uplift) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates a network of 40 high-performing, tuition-free, public charter schools serving 19,000 students in under-served areas across the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. We are a reform-minded organization that has attracted funding from local and national donors such as the Communities Foundation of Texas and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation. Uplift`s mission is to create and sustain public schools of excellence that empower students to reach their highest potential and inspire a lifelong love of learning, achievement, service, and responsible citizenship. Each school provides free college preparatory education in a community that has limited high quality public education options. Our goal is to completely CLOSE the achievement gap between students, regardless of their ethnic or socio-economic background, while ensuring that 100% of our students graduate and enroll in college. The Saugus Union School District is located in Santa Clarita Valley in Northern Los Angeles County. Currently, there are approximately 10,100 students attending fifteen schools. We offer preschool programs on sixteen campuses and have approximately 530 preschoolers enrolled. The newest campus, Emblem Academy, was re-opened in the 2013-2014 school year with a focus on Ethics, Science,Technology, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Mathematics. Thirteen of our schools have been recognized as California Distinguished Schools, many of them more than once. In 2012 - 2013 one school received the Title I National Academic Achievement award. In addition, five schools have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools. Academic Performance Index (API) scores have been consistently strong with all schools over the state goal of 800. In 2012-2013 our API was 876. All demographic areas of student performance continue to show improvement. Saugus Union School District has an active parent participation movement at all sites with School Site Councils and Parent Teacher Organizations supporting community and educational needs at each school. Representatives of these organizations join together to form the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) in order to meet and share information under the leadership of the District Superintendent.
