The Lynchburg City School Division began operation on April 5, 1871 and continues to be recognized as a leader of education in Virginia. Lynchburg City Schools offer educational services to more than 8,000 students enrolled in preschool through adult classes in two high schools, three middle schools, and eleven elementary schools. On the high school level, courses within the instructional program range in level of difficulty to meet the students` needs, interests, and academic abilities. Advanced classes, including advanced placement and dual-enrollment courses for college credit, are offered in all academic areas. Co-curricular programs include eleven boys` interscholastic varsity sports, nine girls` interscholastic varsity sports, and cultural arts programs including arts, drama, band, orchestra, and vocal ensembles.
