The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) was created by an Act of Congress on June 23, 1860 and opened its doors nine months later on March 4, 1861. With 1,700 employees, GPO is the Federal Government’s primary centralized resource for gathering, cataloging, producing, providing, authenticating, and preserving published U.S. Government information in digital and tangible formats. GPO is responsible for the production and distribution of information products and services for all three branches of the Federal Government, including U.S. passports for the Department of State as well as the official publications of Congress, the White House, and other Federal agencies. In addition to publication sales, GPO provides for permanent public access to Federal Government information at no charge through GPO’s Federal Digital System (www.fdsys.gov) and through partnerships with approximately 1,220 libraries nationwide participating in the Federal Depository Library Program. In December 2014, Congress passed legislation and President Barack Obama signed into law that the U.S. Government Printing Office would now be called the U.S. Government Publishing Office.

The Parliament of Canada is composed of three parts: the monarch, the Senate, and the House of Commons. Each has a distinct role, but work in conjunction within the legislative process. Confederation Hall, shown on the cover of this report, probably best symbolizes the House of Commons. Arranged around a central column, the Hall represents the coming together of the provinces and territories to form a country. The many carvings that adorn this circular arcaded entrance foyer illustrate such Canadian values as peace, integrity and justice. Like Confederation Hall, the House of Commons is a meeting place. Representatives from every corner of the country come together in the Chamber and committee rooms. They bring their constituents` ideas and concerns to share with their fellow Members of Parliament. They make decisions that can affect every aspect of our lives. The House of Commons also reaches out to Canadians with information and proposals, welcoming their feedback. These avenues of communication can take many forms, from face-to-face meetings to webcasts. Communication is essential to the House of Commons as a venue in which all ideas may be expressed. The Report to Canadians 2007 presents the work of Members and the House Administration from April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2007, and the Administration`s goals for the upcoming fiscal year. It also offers information on membership in the House of Commons and on the activities of Members of Parliament.

The core mission of OMB is to serve the President of the United States in implementing his/her vision across the Executive Branch. OMB is the largest component of the Executive Office of the President. It reports directly to the President and helps a wide range of executive departments and agencies across the Federal Government to implement the commitments and priorities of the President. As the implementation and enforcement arm of Presidential policy government-wide, OMB carries out its mission through five critical processes that are essential to the President`s ability to plan and implement his priorities across the Executive Branch: Budget development and execution, a significant government-wide process managed from the Executive Office of the President and a mechanism by which a President implements decisions, policies, priorities, and actions in all areas; Management — oversight of agency performance, Federal procurement, financial management, and information/IT (including paperwork reduction, privacy, and security); Coordination and review of all significant Federal regulations by executive agencies, to reflect Presidential priorities and to ensure that economic and other impacts are assessed as part of regulatory decision-making, along with review and assessment of information collection requests; Legislative clearance and coordination (review and clearance of all agency communications with Congress, including testimony and draft bills) to ensure consistency of agency legislative views and proposals with Presidential policy; and Executive Orders and Presidential Memoranda to agency heads and officials, the mechanisms by which the President directs specific government-wide actions by Executive Branch officials. Organizationally, OMB has offices devoted to the development and execution of the Federal Budget, various government-wide management portfolios, and OMB-wide functional responsibilities.
