Marked by more than a century of tradition since its founding by Booker T. Washington in 1881, Tuskegee University is known not only for being among the nation`s premier historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), but for its openness to all. An independent and state-related institution of higher education, TU is Alabama`s only private land-grant university. Its programs serve a student body numbering more than 3,000 students that is coeducational as well as racially, ethnically and religiously diverse. With a strong orientation toward disciplines that highlight the relationship between education and workforce preparation in the sciences, professions and technical areas, Tuskegee University also emphasizes the importance of the liberal arts as a foundation for successful careers in all areas. Academic instruction occurs in five colleges and three schools: the Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business & Information Science; College of Agriculture, Environment & Nutrition Sciences; College of Arts & Sciences; College of Engineering; College of Veterinary Medicine; Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture & Construction Science; School of Education; and School of Nursing & Allied Health. Graduate instruction leading to master`s degrees is offered in seven of the eight colleges and schools. Doctoral degrees are offered in four of the five colleges. U.S. News and the Wall Street Journal both currently rank Tuskegee University fourth nationally among HCBUs. In its “Regional Universities South” category, U.S. News ranks Tuskegee first among Alabama HBCUs, second among regional HBCUs, and 24th among all regional public and private institutions. The university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Nationally recognized for excellence, SU has a creative curriculum emphasizing undergraduate research, study abroad, professional internships and community engagement. The University is home to the College of Health and Human Services and its Schools of Nursing, Social Work and Health Sciences; an Honors College; and four privately endowed schools: the Charles R. & Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts, Richard A. Henson School of Science & Technology, Franklin P. Perdue School of Business, and Samuel W. & Marilyn C. Seidel School of Education.
