Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) – an Ontario government agency – drives quality and continuous improvement in disease prevention and screening, the delivery of care and the patient experience, for cancer, chronic kidney disease, as well as access to care for key health services. Formally launched and funded by the provincial government in 1997, we are governed by an act of legislation called The Cancer Act. As an operational service agency of government, we are accountable to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. The details of our relationship with the Ministry are laid out in a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). We follow the management principles of the Government of Ontario. These principles include ethical behavior, accountability, excellence in management, wise use of public funds, high-quality service to the public and equitable access to high-quality service. We are authorized by the Personal Health Information Protection Act to collect and use personal health information to carry out our role in planning and managing the cancer system.
The Sisters of Bon Secours were founded in 1824 to respond to the needs of those who were sick and dying in Paris by providing health care to them in their homes. Through their care, they believed that they were bringing God`s healing, compassion and liberation to those in need by helping to alleviate their suffering and bringing a message of hope and assurance that there is a God who loves them. The first three Sisters of Bon Secours arrived in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1881, and established their first hospital in 1919. By 1980, the Sisters had established or assumed responsibility for several Catholic hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other health care services. The Sisters formed Bon Secours Health System in 1983 to provide skilled, unified management and professional resources for all their health care operations while preserving their Catholic tradition of providing quality care to all, especially to those who are poor, sick and dying.
We are a fully accredited 60-bed hospital and a 20-bed extended care facility. We provide health services to all residents within Sioux Lookout and the surrounding area, including the Nishnawbe Aski communities north of Sioux Lookout, the Treaty #3 community of Lac Seul First Nation, and residents of Hudson, Pickle Lake and Savant Lake.
