City of Westerville

Safe. Pretty. Fun. These are traits that we desire as we consider a place to live, and Westerville fits the bill for each category. Westerville`s average response times for police, fire and emergency medical services are less than four minutes, about half the national average. Our trained personnel, more than 170 strong for police, fire and communications dispatching alone, are there for you when you need them the most, and our police patrol officers travel with portable AED devices that have already saved two lives of people suffering from potentially deadly heart attacks. Westerville is no longer a bedroom community, but pockets will still remind you of yesteryear. Westerville`s Uptown District, near Otterbein College boasts many homes from the 1800s and a plethora of specialty and antique shops and other attractions. Proud of its heritage and roots, Westerville has restored and renovated community treasures like the historic Everal Barn. Speaking of roots, Westerville is also regarded as a Tree City USA, with more than 20,000 street trees, and we`ve taken care to highlight our streams, waterways, and other unique physical characteristics. Of course, fun is an important component for any community, and Westerville will not disappoint. Aside from Westerville`s recreational amenities, we know how to throw big parties, from professional bike races and Independence Day celebrations to the Music and Arts Festival, concerts in the park, and Fourth Friday celebrations in Uptown Westerville. And these events are just the tip of the iceberg. There are many reasons why Westerville was rated by Columbus Parent readers as the best place to raise a family in central Ohio. Don`t just consider Westerville. Buy Westerville. You`ll be glad you did.

Village of Gowanda

The name “Gowanda” is derived from the Seneca Indian phrase meaning “a valley among the hills” or “under the cliffs,” referring to the village’s location below the Zoar Valley gorge along Cattaraugus Creek. Occupied by various Indian tribes before the American Revolution, the westward movement of our growing nation brought the first settlers here from New England early in the 19th century. What is now Gowanda was settled in 1810 by Turner Aldrich, who bought 707 acres on both sides of the creek from the Holland Land Company. He cleared the land, built a cabin, a sawmill and a gristmill. The settlement was called Aldrich’s Mills until 1823 when the name was changed to Lodi. The village was incorporated as Gowanda in 1848. Ahaz Allen settled next in 1812, erecting a cabin above Aldrich’s in what is now called Hidi. The first white child born here was his daughter, Caroline, in 1813. The next year he dug a race, dammed the creek, and built a sawmill. Allen built the first frame house here in 1815 on what is now Beech Street. It burned and was torn down in 1970. Those who followed these pioneers to this beautiful valley have each left their mark, large or small, in its streets, buildings, factories, businesses and institutions. The history of Gowanda is charted through fire and flood, economic boom or bust, immigration and migration, and the inevitable march of time.
