Union Settlement Association is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages and a strong advocate for the needs of underserved communities. Since opening our doors in 1895, Union Settlement has brought education, wellness, and community-building programs to the people of East Harlem—a neighborhood rich in culture and diversity that also is one of the lowest-income communities in New York City. By helping our neighbors realize their goals, we build the vitality and success of East Harlem. Our offerings—from youth and adult education, to Meals-on-Wheels, mental health services and programs for seniors–span more than a dozen locations across our neighborhood. They are designed to touch every member of a family and support the needs of every generation and culture in our neighborhood.

Founded over sixty years ago by Dr. Henry Viscardi, Jr. who himself wore prosthetic legs and became one of the world’s leading advocates for people with disabilities, as well as a disability advisor to U.S. eight presidents, from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Jimmy Carter, The Viscardi Center is a network of non-profit organizations that provides a lifespan of services for children and adults with disabilities. It is a hub for leading edge approaches to education and employment and pro-active efforts that aim to shape and influence policy changes that will benefit the people it serves.
We are diverse. We are teachers, educators and pre-professionals. We are 4th grade teachers, science middle school teachers, high school English teachers and coaches. We are special education teachers, college professors and students just taking their first foundations class. We are administrators, support professionals and those who continue to serve the teaching profession through their retired membership.
